If your cat follows you to the bathroom, don't ignore it: what it's trying to tell you... See more

If your cat follows you to the bathroom, it might not be a coincidence 🐱🚽

You close the bathroom door… and a few seconds later, your cat is there, sitting in front of you or perched on the toilet seat, with that look that seems to say, “We need to talk.”

Rest assured: this behavior is usually perfectly normal.

Cats often follow their humans into the bathroom out of curiosity, a desire for attention, or simply because they like to be near their trusted companion. Some also appreciate this room because it's part of their daily routine and offers them a quiet place to explore.

So, what is your cat trying to tell you?

There isn't one single “message.” Your cat might simply want:

Your attention: a cuddle or play session wouldn't go amiss.

To be near you: following you from room to room can be a sign of affection.

Satisfying their curiosity: a closed door is often an invitation to explore for a cat.

Remind you of something: food, water, litter box to clean… cats are very good at getting our attention when a need isn't being met.

And when they settle down comfortably on the toilet like the one in the photo, they aren't necessarily asking you for anything. They may simply have decided that this spot is now their observation post.

But watch out for sudden changes. If your cat becomes much more clingy than before, meows more, or shows changes in appetite, water consumption, behavior, or activity level, it's best to talk to a veterinarian. An unusual change in behavior can sometimes be accompanied by stress or a health problem.

In short, if your cat accompanies you to the bathroom, there's no need to panic: they're probably just convinced that you should never be alone. 😹
